Harvard professor David Gordon Lyon (1852-1935) held one of the first Assyriology positions in the United States and worked tirelessly to promote the study of ancient cultures that once flourished in today's Middle East. Join Peter Der Manuelian, Joseph Greene, and Adam Aja in a discussion of Lyon's life and contributions that will highlight his interactions with Harvard presidents, millionaires, and other twentieth-century notables, as well as his approach to assembling Harvard's Ancient Near Eastern collection and establishing the Harvard Semitic Museum. Join the speakers to learn about the museum's treasures and the exciting transformation it is currently undergoing.
Featuring a rich assortment of antiquities collected by Lyon, a new exhibition opening December 5, 2014 allows visitors to explore the history of the ancient Near East at the Harvard Semitic Museum, founded 125 years ago in 1889. See Mesopotamian cuneiform tablets, ancient Palestinian pottery, Egyptian funerary art, and ethnographic treasures, along with Lyon’s own travel and excavation photographs.
